Basics of Blacksmithing

Service Description

3 Hours of basic instruction on the tools, techniques, and processes of the ancient art of shaping iron and steel with heat and the blows of the hammer. Participants will learn much of the jargon and uses of the smith's tools including how to setup a forge, grasp hot metal with tongs and hammer without without wearing-out joints. You will learn to bend, twist, cut and draw steel. You will be able to estimate temperature by color and how to make shift anvils. This is an intro to concepts course that consists of lecture and hands-on application. Most of all, this is a fun experience molding metal in ways that few in this age of technology ever get to enjoy.
